Seventeen-year-old Michael Riggio, who was on the boat, spoke to Daily Telegraph about the incident:

“It was surreal, we couldn’t believe our eyes,” he said.

However, the gigantic mammal wasn’t just stopping by to say hello.

It needed help.

A plastic bag, along with other garbage, had become lodged over its head and mouth.

A fisherman in the boat opposite to Riggio, Ron Kovacs, spoke about trying to help the beleaguered whale:

He just popped his head up so you could reach out and remove the garbage. He tried on my boat but we are a bit higher,” he said.

“I made one grab for the bag but missed.”

He also spoke highly of the animal’s intelligence:

“He was very inquisitive and more interested in us,” he said.

“You could see that big eye coming out watching us.

They are not dumb for sure.”

The altruistic crew managed to free the whale from its trash-based shackles. It repaid them by waving a fin, seriously, and swimming away.
