A Louisiana teenager was badly beaten up after a routine trip to the gas station turned violent.

According to KTBS-TV, Jessica Byrnes-Laird was waiting for her boyfriend at the A&Y Quick Stop in Shreveport last Sunday night when several unknown assailants approached her car and started making lewd comments about her.

The 18-year-old was still wearing her bikini after spending the day swimming, and as her boyfriend exited the store and overheard the comments, he fought off the men until he could get in the car to drive away:

It was at that point when, according to an eyewitness, one of them took a brass pipe and threw it into the open passenger window, hitting Jessica in the face.

Not only is Jessica dealing with physical pain from the ordeal, but she is also troubled by the emotional impact of the event as well.

She told the station:

There’s a little bit of fear, honestly, because going through this makes you realize how delicate life is, and you never know what can happen. Things happen so suddenly, without warning.”

She added that the support she’s received from her boyfriend, her family, and even strangers has been extremely encouraging as she recovers from her broken mouth and other injuries. At least 10 of her teeth were broken, and her face is filled with stitches.

The Shreveport Police Department is currently examining the gas station’s surveillance video and asking for anyone with information on the incident to come forward. Unfortunately, the moment when the brass pipe entered the car wasn’t caught on video:

Cpl. Marcus Hines told KTBS:

“That information in invaluable many times in helping to ID suspects and to actually get a unbiased view of what actually took place in many cases.”

GoFundMe account has been set up to benefit Jessica’s dental bills.
