When local Detroit news reporter Charlie LeDuff confronted Chief of Police James Craig with the homicide numbers so far this year, he wasn’t completely prepared.
Craig was able to locate the numbers for the body count thus far in 2015. This included 144 total, as opposed to 128 at this time last year.
LeDuff pushed the Chief more, asking about “justifiable” homicides. These are homicides not included in official reports because they occur when someone is murdered in self-defense.
Identified as the most violent city in the U.S. by the F.B.I., the police department is struggling to retain officers. Even worse, as LeDuff discovers in the video, the officers starting salary is “14 and change.”
