Tennessee high school football coach hospitalized after student attack: sheriff

A 17-year-old student has been arrested after apparently assaulting the head football coach at Riverdale High School in Rutherford County.

A spokesman with the school district confirmed the arrest took place Tuesday morning after the incident at the Murfreesboro school.

The alleged assault happened around 10:15 a.m. in coach Ron Aydelott’s office. The junior was apparently turning in paper work needed to try out for the football team.

It was not yet known what triggered the incident.

Witnesses said the student felt disrespected and attacked Aydelott. He had to be restrained by other students and a school resource officer.

Aydelott was transported to the emergency room at Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital. He was later taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

His exact condition was not available, but Aydelott reportedly suffered severe facial injuries, including a possible broken jaw.

Aydelott is one of the most well-known coaches in Middle Tennessee. He’s been at Riverdale for nearly 10 years and previously coached at Hillsboro High School, where he led the team to a number of championships.

The student’s identity was not released. He was arrested by a school resource officer and later charged with aggravated assault.

He was expected to appear in Rutherford County Juvenile Court at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
