Alabama man kills teen after home invasion, rape of neighbor: cops

Gadsden police are investigating a home-invasion robbery that ended with the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old suspect.

According to a press release from the police, about 3 a.m. Monday, three men — at least one of them armed with a handgun — kicked in the front door of a residence in the 2100 block of Norris Avenue, waking the 37-year-old woman living there.

One of the men came in her bedroom and put a gun to her head, then forcibly raped her while the two other men ransacked the house. At some point, she told police, the two men ransacking the house left. The man who assaulted her stayed behind, demanding money while beating her in the head.

In an apparent attempt to stop the assault and get the attacker out of her home, she told him a neighbor kept all her money. The attacker forced her at gunpoint to go down the street to the neighbor’s home.

At the neighbor’s, the victim knocked and yelled for the 59-year-old to give her her money because she was being attacked.

The man looked out the window at the woman, held at gunpoint. He called 911.

The assailant saw the neighbor was on the phone and yelled for him to get off the phone, then fired twice in the air before aiming his gun at the neighbor.

The neighbor was armed too, and when the assailant pointed his gun at the 59-year-old, he was afraid he would be shot and fired one shot, striking the assailant in the chest. The assailant ran a short distance before collapsing and died within seconds from his wound.

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment and the neighbor was taken to police headquarters for questioning. He was released afterward.

The investigation continues and police have not released the name of the 17-year-old male who was fatally shot. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the detective division at 256-549-4630.
