Are we really American idiots?

U.S. adults ages 16-34 are the worst, or nearly the worst, at a variety of professional skills when compared to their counterparts in 22 countries, a new study reveals.

“Millennials are often portrayed as being on track to be our best educated generation ever, but their skill levels are comparatively weak,” wrote researchers from Educational Testing Service.

Members of the so-called Generation Y ranked last in ability to work with numbers. And only their counterparts in Spain and Italy had lower literary scores.

Supposedly tech-savvy Millennials also landed in last place in the category measuring how well they use computer applications to solve work problems.

This American unexeceptionalism wasn’t limited to the under-educated. Millennials with a master’s degree or better were also near the bottom, ahead of only similar residents of Ireland, Poland and Spain.

Researchers urged policymakers to explore how to prepare student for real world work.

“It doesn’t look like we’re in a good place with the future workforce, parents and citizens,” said Madeline Goodman, who worked on the study.

The stagnant education system and a generational wealth gap have contributed to this mess, said Dan Schawbel, a workplace expert.

But Millennials can “skill up” by finding mentors and taking free or inexpensive online courses, he adds.

Previous also research raised concerns about American loseritis. A Bentley University study said that hiring managers gave recent college grads no better than a C grade for workplace preparedness. Six in 10 of the managers said their companies were negatively affected by their new hires’ lack of preparation.
